Fabrique des Lumières, Amsterdam

In the former gas plant of Westergasfabriek

Culturespaces, the European creator and manager of the critically acclaimed ‘Atelier des Lumières’ in Paris, has announced the creation of a new digital art centre in Amsterdam. The ‘Fabrique des Lumières’ will open on 22 April 2022, in the former gas plant of Westergasfabriek.

Since opening in Paris, France, in 2018, Atelier des Lumières has attracted more than three million visitors to experience digitized works of art created by artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Gustav Klimt, and Salvador Dalí.

The Westergasfabriek was built in 1885 by the Imperial Continental Gas Association, before being converted in 1993 into a cultural space. Located in Westerpark, ten minutes from the historic city centre, the Fabrique des Lumières will use cutting-edge, unique technology to create immersive exhibitions devoted to some of the most celebrated figures in art history. The venue has a surface area of 2,800m² and is intended for the inhabitants of Amsterdam and the surrounding region. The exhibitions, which are accessible to all generations, will be designed to complement the unique architecture of the site, with its seventeen-metre-high walls. In addition to the immersive exhibitions that focus on classical and modern artists, an area will be devoted to the exhibition of contemporary works.

Following the creation of our digital art centres in France, we are pleased to create this new one for the City of Amsterdam. The Fabrique des Lumieres will offer visitors of Netherlands an unforgettable immersive and sensorial artistic experience.’ Bruno Monnier, President of Culturespaces

The Amsterdam West municipality is pleased with the arrival of this digital art centre. ‘An innovative art centre that is an asset to Westergas and all Amsterdammers, but certainly also for the neighborhood. For local residents, this also means that there will be less traffic nuisance, because there will soon be no more events in the Zuiveringshal, but only this beautiful art centre’ said district manager Melanie van der Horst.
